Magnetic paint is child-safe, acrylic latex water-based primer that turns any porous interior surface into a magnetic receptive surface. One quart covers 25 square feet.

How to Paint with Active Wall Magnetic Paint

MagnaMagic's Active Wall magnetic paint is designed as a primer. The primed area can then be top-coated with any color latex paint. We recommend the use of sheet type magnets or neodymium magnets for the best results.

Apply the paint with a foam roller to achieve a smooth finish. Nap rollers are not recommended. Do not over-roll as this will tend to leave a more textured look. This is not the result of the paint but the result of the roller running out of paint and at this point you start to pull the wet paint from the surface of the wall.

For the smoothest finish it is advised to paint in two foot squares and smooth the surface out with a 4" foam brush after you have applied the paint with a foam roller be sure to do this immediately after the roller finishes each two foot area.

I purchased this and was disppointed with the less than luster magnetic ability. I did 3 coats of paint and it will only hold very light magnets - it will not hold a magnetic clip with paper attached to it, or even a decorative magnet on it's own. Plain chalkboard paint for a quarter of the price is a better deal, and buy a cork board for other things

Benefits of the Magnetic Paint ?

  • Kitchen Message Board – It can be a challenge to find just the right size message board for unique kitchen wall spaces. Especially if the wall is oddly shaped, tucked between cabinets or covered with light switches or outlets. You can create your own message center with magnetic paint. Simply paint the area with magnetic paint, then cover with your desired paint color. You can even paint over magnetic paint with chalkboard paint to create a magnetic chalkboard message center that will fit anywhere!
  • Back Door Reminders Board – Mudrooms and back entryways are often cramped for space. Instead of hanging a message board that can easily be bumped or knocked down, paint a wall or the back of the door with magnetic paint. It’s the perfect place to hang school notes or d

  • Kids’ Fun Wall – Give kids a space that will entertain them for hours. Paint a wall with magnetic paint, then with chalkboard paint. For added fun, paint a simple house and road where they can draw or play with magnetic figures. (You can find a variety of magnetic sets at many toy stores, or create your own by printing their favorite characters on cardstock and gluing magnets to the back.)
  • Teens’ Wall Saver – Tired of your teens hanging posters with pins and making Swiss cheese out of their bedroom walls? Paint one wall with magnetic paint, then give them a set of cool magnets to hang all their favorite posters.
  • Game Table – Create a magnetic game table by painting a simple table with magnetic paint, then painting a checkerboard on top. Then buy or create two sets of fun magnets to use for the checkers. The best part? No more scattered pieces when the dog bumps the table. This is also a great project if you rent or otherwise don’t want to repaint your walls.Ready to start? We found magnetic paint at a local paint store (such as Sherwin Williams), though not at the home improvement superstores. You can also find it online at Chalkboard paint is easier to find, and available at most home improvement stores.
  • Magnetic Paint turns any paintable surface into a magnetic playland. Magnetic Paint is a gray latex primer that makes any surface able to attract and hold magnets. It is child safe and non-toxic.
  • Use Magnetic Paint like any latex interior paint; consult a paint expert for tips and advice on surface preparation so that latex paint will stick well. This is real Magnetic Paint, not an additive. Don't confuse real paint with a powdered mix-in!
  • Be sure to mix the magnetic paint thoroughly before use, and stir often while you are painting, as the iron particles will tend to separate out as you work.
  • Apply at least 2 coats, the more coats the better (we've used 3 coats of this magnetic paint with excellent results using magnetic foam letters, such as our ML078 Upper Case or ML079 Lower Case letters; we recommend 4 coats of magnetic paint for using molded plastic magnetic letters (the kind with a small magnet embedded in the back).
  • After the magnetic paint dries, you can apply wallpaper or your favorite color of a paint top-coat latex paint right over the magnetic paint, and your surface is now magnetic.
  • You can paint your classroom wall with magnetic paint, then cover it with the same color paint as before, and no one will ever know unless they stick a magnet to it!  [Remember, you didn't hear it from us!]
  • The 1-pint can covers 12-15 square feet with two coats (depending on how you prepare the surface before painting).  One quart covers up to 25 square feet with two coats, and one gallon covers up to 100 square feet with two coats.
